Safaricom has introduced the following easy ways to cancel, or reverse a transaction

Reversing using SMS code 456

Immediately you realise you have made a wrong transaction, copy and send your confirmation message to the number 456. You will immediately be notified of your reversal request, and the cash held for futher confirmation by safaricom.

It will take 2 hours for the transaction to be fully reversed, after both the sender and recipient are both contacted.

Cancel Transaction using Hakikisha

Safaricom gives a 25 second window after you make a transaction to cancel it, after they confirm the name of the recipient in form of a pop up window on your screen. 

Press any number on your phone, and press send as a reply, the transaction will be immediately cancelled.

Call Customer Care

Another way to reverse an erroneous transaction is to call Safaricom customer care on either 100 or 234 from a safaricom line.

This is abit tedious, because you will have to wait for sometime before you can speak to an agent. But it is worth the wait, since money is at stake here.

You will be asked a few questions to confirm line ownership and the reason for the reversal.

Visit An Mpesa Agent

You can also vist an Mpesa agent for the reversal. This a better option than calling cutomer care number, because it is a bit faster to connect and effect the reversal.

Mpesa reversal takes between 24 and 48 hrs to go through fully, so you must be patient.

There are some ways you can use to avoid sending money to a wrong number, be sure to use them to reduce the risk of making a mistake.

  • Save the number you wish to send money to in your sim card. While in the process of sending, instead of entering the number, search from the sim card and press select.
  • If you have a smart phone, hold the number your want to send money to in the call logs or contacts for a few seconds until is shows 'copy'. Press copy, and paste the number in the box where you are requested to enter number while sending the money.
